Castel Sant'Angelo was originally constructed as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family between 134 and 139 AD. In the 14th century, this heavyset, round structure was transformed into a castle and became a refuge for the Popes. A secret tunnel was built to connect the castle to St. Peter's Basilica, which served as an escape route during the siege of 1527. The Papal State also utilized the fortress as a prison and execution ground. Today, Castel Sant'Angelo functions as a museum, showcasing stunning Renaissance frescoes and various works of art on the second floor. The third floor even features the setting for Puccini's famous opera, Tosca. Visitors can explore underground to uncover the secret tunnels once traversed by prisoners and Popes, while hearing fascinating stories from the past.
